My Name is Laurie and I'm an Elkaholic

These pictures were taken this weekend. My dad, brother, neighbor Lois, Shasta (the Disasta) and I drove up the West Rosebud River drainage, above Fishtail, Montana.

We saw a lot of wildlife on the trip. The photos, below, were taken about 20 miles from home just off of the gravel road that leads to Mystic Lake, where my dad was raised.

We were driving along and my brother spotted an elk coming out of the barrow ditch on the side of the road. I bailed out of the car (ala Mary) with my sweatshirt half on and the camera bag around my neck. I nearly choked on the seatbelt but managed to untangle myself and started snapping pictures. I think the other members of the expedition thought I was nuts.

Lone elk crossing the road...

A few of her friends followed...

And a few more...

They didn't go far...

It must have been dinner time.

There were more of them in the trees, but I couldn't get them all in the shot.

We drove further up the road and had another adventure (or two) which I will probably blog about later in the week. It was a splendid road trip and a good time was had by all. Even the elk.

**I hope my blog title doesn't offend anyone**

Excellent pix, Laurie. And fantastic post title, I say.

Glad you didn't strangle yourself just getting out of your car, though (*Runs away*).

Elk are called either wapiti (the native Indian name) or caribou up here...they're very common in Alberta and British Columbia and way up north...

Cuppa, glad you enjoyed the photos. It was a great day.

Laura, at least it's a good addiction!

WW, Glad you liked the title. I didn't want to offend anyone...

You better run! I won't even tell you that I got so excited I lost a lens cap and couldn't get the camera bag open to get out my 300 mm lens. :-|

Great avatar, by the way.

I did not know that elks went to AA meetings.

Laurie--I think your title was cleverly creative.

You saw elk in a lot more action than we did--when we were in Oregon & drove through the elk preserve, there were 2 herds, but they were just grazing, no running, crossing the road or anything. They are magnificent animals.

That's a pretty great photo-op. It brings back memories of our trip out west n 2000.

Wow, Laurie! The fourth pic is lovely enough to frame! Hey, if I were to get caught in the seatbelt, I'd try to drag the whole car with me to get a shot of those.

Glad you had some great road trips and adventures and I'm glad you're sharing them.

How courageous of you to admit that you have an addiction:o) to elk.

I think I may be a JackHead(Jack Russel Terrior addict) I'm not ready to give it up cold turkey just yet.

Ur-spo, me either, I thought they went to the Elks Club!

KG, I'm glad you like the title, I worried that I'd offend someone. The elk up there are always rather skiddish, I suppose it's because they are fair game during hunting season :-(.

AC, all of the drainages around Absarokee are full of wildlife. We are very lucky.

Mary, I thought of you when I was struggling to get out of the car. "What would Mary do?" I left the door wide open and headed after the elk. I'm sure I was a sight to behold...

Chani, it really is. And this is just one small drainage!

MsPea, there are worse addictions than Jack Russell Terriers, such as the 6 cats I have running around the house all of the time. ;-)

oh there are a lot of elkies at the elks club!

You were very fortunate to get these shots - I love the ones of the elk browsing in the grass. Nice backlighting...

How pretty! The landscape is so different than what we have here.

Watch that baling 'ala Mary' routine. She was dealing with a large bird. These are huge 'hoofed' mammals.

What great pixes! The puddles of sunshine - the leaping. Sure makes my backyard wildlife look tame.

Great title and photos!

Nothing like a good cruise with a little excitement.

dmmgmfm said...

Ur-spo, that there are!

Bonita, glad you like them. I was thrilled to have the chance to "shoot" them.

Gina, I've never been to your neck of the woods. Could you post some photos?

Cathy, my dad thought I was nuts, bailing out of the car like that. So did neighbor Lois. I couldn't help myself, though.

Pam, it seems like every trip lately has been exciting. If I'm not getting hopelessly lost, I'm finding herds of elk. I wonder what is up with that?

I could totally see you bailing out of the car with camera barely in hand. *L* I loved the title! But, how's Dale? I have his package ready but life got kind of nuts so I hope I can get to the post office tomorrow!

dmmgmfm said...

Butterfly, Dale is struggling. The Graft Vs Host is pretty bad.

I have hesitated to update because it seems pretty bleak and I was hoping for an upswing to report.

I will post about it soon.

Thank you so much, I know your package will mean a whole lot to him.

*Hugs*

the only thing that offends me, is that I didn't think of the title first.

ELKSCELLENT Title!

Only WW calls Elk, 'Caribou' up here..what a maroon!
He must have googled some weird site to try and sound like he's Marlin Frickin'Perkins.
Oh welk, he deserves a good Wapiti upside the head but he means welk!

Q: Why did the elk in rut cross the road?

A: To get to the other hide.

(i just made that up. i am sofa king funny!)
