Dumped on in Denver

As some of you know, my son lives in the Denver area. He loves it there and often teases me about the difference in weather. When I’m sitting in the house with a sweatshirt on and a blanket over my lap because it’s -20 outside, he’s running around in shorts because it's 70 degrees there.

The parking lot at his apartment complex.

The view from his bedroom window. Pretty startling, since he lives on the SECOND floor. That's a serious snow drift.

Who's laughing now, son?

Now I feel really bad. His best friends are stuck in the snow in Lafayette and he has to put the chains on his car and go get them! I'm a cruel, worried mom!

That photograph of the view from your son’s bedroom window is not only startling but alarming.

Nick, the wind blew all day and piled the snow up on that side of the building.

My son says they are only allowing emergency travel, power has been disrupted and the airport is closed down.

I am crossing my fingers that he'll make it home for Christmas.

Oh, this brings back memories of the years we lived in Denver - '69 to76.
I'm very familiar with those blizzards. They can descend with no warning and leave you stranded only miles from home because of the white-outs and drifts. Pretty exciting when you're young - a little more intimidating at my age. My kid sis in Colorado Springs says their city was shut down today, also. I'll bet your son is having fun with it.

Ouch. I missed that he's got to go pick up friends. Hope he's got warm blankets and candy bars on board.
I'll bet he'll be home for Christmas - the old adage about Colorado weather is: if you don't like the current weather wait a few minutes - the sun will come out and have those drifts melted in a couple days. In that thin dry air the sun is so intense it cleans things up pretty fast.

lookingup, He was going out to pick up his friends who are stranded 4.7 miles away, but there is a car blocking the entrance to his parking lot. The lot is fenced and he is unable to get out.

He knocked on every door in the place trying to find the owner, but didn’t find him. He tried pushing it out of the way, but it wouldn't budge. He’s pretty upset that he can’t help his friends, but they are at a hospital along with a lot of other stranded folks. They are safe and that is what matters.

I’d prefer him to stay off of the road—they are closed to everything but emergency travel, but he’s an adult (I keep telling myself that). I’m sure if the car moves; he’ll put the chains on his tires and go fetch them. He always keeps a sleeping bag, flashlight and extra provisions in his vehicle and he’s a darned good driver too, but I can’t help worrying anyway.

Great news! My son's friends are home, safe and sound.

They befriended a woman and her small child while they were stranded at the hospital. It turned out that she lives a mile or so from their apartment, so when the roads were cleared this morning she drove them home in her 4 wheel drive Jeep.

There are some very nice people in the world!

Holiday Hugs to all,
Laurie

Hmmm...I walk around with a blanket wrapped around me when it's like 68 degrees! I don't think I'd survive where you are, -20!

I'm not a hardy sort.

Will your son make it home? - mine just walked in the door from Boston and I know how it makes a mother's heart sing to have her son back under her roof:0) Sure hope yours makes it.

KC, When I was young, I liked the cold weather; now that I'm in my dotage, not so much.

Lookingup, I really, really hope so. They are saying they aren't going to open D.I.A. until noon tomorrow, so it's hard to say if he will or not. He couldn't be here last year for Christmas, could fate be that cruel twice in a row?

I'm glad your son made it home safely. Have a very Merry Christmas.

The snow is finaly going away here. Though the side streets are a complete mess, Ill have to send another picture I took to you some time mom of my car. It had about 4 feet of snow covering it. We cleared the snow from behind it and I backed it out of the spot so we could see how much would stick and almost all of it did! It was hilarous. I think it will take awhile for denver to realy get to full swing, even the regular streets are still prety snowy and icy.

Son, I'm glad you are having a good time, though it doesn't surprise me. You always did make the best of any situation. Have I mentioned lately how much I love you?

Can't wait until our January Christmas.

Love,
Mom
