A Bright and Shiny Weekend

I am spending another (long) weekend in Absarokee with my dad, brother and of course, Shasta the Wonder Dog.

(Shasta is a big help in the driving department)

Our mission:

1. Take Shasta on an adventure

2. Clean Uncle John's chimney

3. Gather enough wood for John to heat his house for at least a month

(As you can see, my brother does all the work while I take pictures)

We filled this truck up too, but by then I was so tired from lugging the wood around, I didn't get my camera out to document it.

Tomorrow we unload, split and stack wood.

To be continued...

I live out in the boondocks, too, and we collect, cut, and split out own firewood. I enjoy it- it's one of the few productive things you can do outside in the cold, and there's nothing nicer than a warm fire on a cold evening!

PS - I meant to tell you that I linked to your site. Let me know if you'd rather I didn't. (Sometimes people would rather not be associated with the weirdness over at my place, and that doesn't hurt my feelings.)

How merry is a wood fire! And a kettle and an uncle and a shasta curled up by the fender.

Many hands make light work. I am sure you had fun along with all the lifting, lugging and loading! Looks like it anyway.

I love the smell of wood in the fireplace. What a cool dog! Is he nice to your kitties?

Thomas, I agree. I work at a computer all day and this is a very nice change from that. My uncle has a bad hip and the heat from a wood fire really helps the pain, plus it helps his budget.

I am honored that you linked to my blog! I have added your link to mine as well. Thanks!

Joe, it is great fun. Shasta had a wonderful time collecting wood until she fell into a small stream that had frozen over, but not solidly enough to hold her. I was just getting ready to dive in after her when she made it to the shore. She spent the rest of the day in the pickup where it was warm.

AC, this isn't work, this is fun! And we get a warm fuzzy feeling from helping Uncle John too.

Dave, it was a wonderful day in every way.

Cuppa, you are right. My brother and I accomplish a lot when we work together. Plus, is's FUN!

Mspea, Shasta is afraid of cats, but don't tell anyone. I don't want to ruin her reputation in the dog community.

The kitties live in Forsyth, with me and Shasta resides in Absarokee with my brother and dad. So their paths rarely cross.

what i'd give to be in that snow - ok - just for an hour - but the crisp clean air would be magic to my lungs!

hang in there with the haulin' and cleanin'

Pink, We are having a wonderful time. We go out wood cutting about once a month, and it's like a tonic. I'm tired when we finish, but it's a good, I've accomplished something kind of tired. :)

I can smell the fresh cold air - feel that satisfying fatigue in the muscles - not to mention the heart-warming satisfaction of having helped another. This is all so neat.

That Shasta is cool. Especially with the stick shift.

I love the way Shasta helps with the driving. It looks like you had a lovely day.

Cathy, I slept like a baby and woke up with a new lease on life. If I hauled wood everyday, I'd be in shape!

Rhea, Shasta is a sweetheart. She loves adventure, unless of course she gets cold. Then she loves the pickup.

Carol, I don't know how the day could have been better.

Enjoy the weekend, Laurie. Alex and I staying in and bundled up even though my mom wanted me to check some stuff at her house. The temperature here I Kentucky is now 13 F and falling. The 100+ year old house of my isn’t very warm.

Thanks Nick. It has been a very nice weekend. I've extended my stay another day because we didn't get everything done that we needed to.

I am glad you and Alex are snuggled up inside. You shouldn't be out in temperatures like that unless it's absolutely necessary.

I'm sending warm thoughts your way.

I have heard that the morning wood is the hardest to chop.

HE, you are a very bad boy (but in a good way) ;-)

That was a beautiful photo of the sun through the trees, Laurie. You are having a great weekend, hard work, but fun, right?

Hard work and adventure is always enhanced and entertaining by having a dog by your side - Shasta the Wonder Dog! HA!

Mary, It was more fun than hard work. I loved every minute of it and so did Shasta the Wonder Dog (formerly known as Shasta the Disasta).

I'm glad you liked the tree/sun picture. I was surprised that it turned out as well as it did since I was shooting right into the sun.

Ur-spo, I'm not Canadian, but some of my favorite bloggers are. Does that count?
