My Hometown

I have arrived safely in Absarokee (Montana). The weather is absolutely splendid and the trees are finally budding. The only birds I've seen so far are robins and grackels, but I am hopeful that with the change in weather, other varieties will be arriving shortly. I have my camera at the ready for just such an event.

This morning I went on a walking tour of town, such as it is. There are approximately 1,000 inhabitants of this fair berg, so there really isn't a lot to see. As usual, I wasn't particularly interested in taking pictures of buildings and people, my main focus was on the scenery.

So here, for your viewing pleasure, is my hometown.

The street where I live(d)...

About a half a block from home
.

About a half block from home, in the other direction.

Where I went to school, ages 10-13. It's a community center now.

Main Street, USA.

This would be a good picture, if there weren't any powerlines in it. How DARE they run those through such a beautiful area!

looks quiet.

Ur-spo, that it is. I stood in the middle of main street taking pictures for at least 5 minutes before anyone came along. :-)

Laurie! Thar be snow in them thar hills!!! Wow.

I can't imagine growing up in the presence of such powerful scenery.

I'm so glad you took us on this tour. I hope you're getting some rest and feeling a little restored.

You are welcome here anytime Chani. And I will pass on your words to Dale.

Cathy, it is gorgeous here, I am very lucky to have lived in such a wonderful place and to be able to come home to it.

I've been pretty busy today, but I've been doing things I wanted to do, so it feels restful. Thanks.

Gorgeous! Are those the Grand Tetons? I've always wanted to see them.

It's amazing that there are still places in America where you can stand in the road for 5 minutes before anything comes along. I would love that so much.

Heartsin, those are the Beartooth Mountains. Absarokee is in south central Montana, 60 miles from the largest city in the state (Billings, population around 100,000) and about the same distance from Yellowstone National Park. It is a very beautiful area.

And you didn't get lost!
The mountains are lovely--and I think they have restorative powers.
You could take the power line poles out of the photo with Photoshop--but of course the real eye sore is that they are where they are at all.

KG, I will probably try taking the poles out when I get home. The laptop I'm on doesn't have photoshop on it, unfortunately.

I agree that the mountains have restorative powers. I can feel my strength coming back already.

What a gorgeous spot. I've only been out to the mountains once, and they moved me greatly.

That power line thing makes me upset all the darn time. Such eyesoars!

Hope you feel refreshed soon!

You really cant beat growing up in a small town. Hope all is well and that Dale is doing better. Best wishes. >:D< Dawn

I'm glad you safely arrived, Laurie.

Thanks for the photos. (You know how much I enjoy seeing pics of places). The mountains are magnificent.

AC, it is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, of course I've never really been anywhere...

BG, I'm working on it. And I hate the darned things too!

Dawn, thanks for stopping in. Dale is still struggling, unfortunately, but I'll keep you posted.

Nick, so glad you like them!

Worse than powerlines are those ubiquitous cell phone towers. The rural landscape in Oklahoma used to be the prettiest in America- now it's been irrevocably defaced with big blinking towers.

I LOVE your hometown! It's peaceful and quaint, and I have a passion for big mountains. I will take the power lines out of the last photo, it needs to be done!

And I'm messing around with your cats... = )

Gorgeous pictures, Laurie...including your new avatar!!!

Absarokee looks like a fantastic place to have grown up in and a great place to see.

The power lines are unwelcome, for sure, but the majesty of those Montana Mountains still comes through...

Rest up and feel that strength come back.

Beautiful. Looks like a nice place to grow up. Reminds me of my husband's hometown in Canada.

Thomas, I agree, they are truly ugly.

(**Hides cell phones in purse**)

Pam, I am so excited to see your new and improved version of my photos. Thank you!

WW, I'm glad you liked the photo tour, it really is a beautiful place.

As for the avatar, I think next time I'll use a picture of a rabbit's bum that I took on our adventure yesterday. What do you think?

KGMom said...

So, I noticed your profile photo keeps changing. You have gone from two eyes peeping out, to your full face, to a bunny butt? Huh?

WithinWithout said...

Hmmm...so who IS the real Laurie?

I think I have to take the 5th...or should you maybe just photoshop bunny ears onto the pic you had on just before this one?

dmmgmfm said...

KG, I haven't decided which one to use. What do you think?

WW, you think I should photoshop ears onto my previous picture, huh?

I'll give that some thought. ;-)

OH, Laurie. What a beautiful place, surrounded by snow capped mountains. What a lucky girl! It's nice and heartwarming to take a tour down memory lane, isn't it?
